All about Aunts

So I had a whirlwind trip into Omaha yesterday to celebrate my Aunt Lorraine's 85th birthday. She is my Godmother too and my mom and her were really close. I always loved her - she is an inspiration to me. When I was little, I wanted to be an artist like her. As we've grown older, I discovered we shared the same politics and love some of the same books. Plus, she's always dressed so elegantly. My siblings tell me her and her ex-husband were like characters straight out of Mad Men in the 1960s. Fun, always dressed to the nines and totally cultured.

We had a nice lunch at Biaggi's and I did really, really well until the goodbye part. It was really hard to see my two aunts without my mom. I was so used to the three of them over the years and when I hugged my mom's best friend, Chloe, I just kind of lost it. Of course, it doesn't help that I woke up at 4 to catch this flight and I'm catching a cold!

After the lunch, Barb, Dave, Chris and I headed to the house so I could check it out. It was nice to see it all dolled up for sale. My siblings think it doesn't feel like our parents house, but I'm sorry, it still does. I don't think I'll ever stop thinking of it as "my home."

Barb had a bag of things for me to take home. My mom had been organizing our papers for years and it's filled with all the cards I made for them over the years. Programs of musicals I was in. News clippings about dean's list. Basically, my childhood, but in paper form.

But speaking of aunts, there is one very dear aunt I did not get to see in my quick trip. But I found a paper I wrote about her sometime in elementary school. Here it is:

The person I admire is my Aunt Jean. She is a very special person whom I have always loved. I like her good example. She is a very holy person and is a wonderful listener.

I often talk to her about problems and she understands. She helped me grow very much. Her understanding and dear example helped me bite my lip when I was angry. Her values have always been wonderful.

She helps many people and she helps the poor. She gives us money every Christmas. This year, she didn't get a Christmas bonus, but she gave us McDonald's gift certificates.

She is everybody's favorite aunt and I hope to be a favorite aunt just like her, following her good examples.

In case you're wondering, I got an A+ for this essay. The teacher wrote: This is a beautiful paper, Becky! You are lucky to have such a wonderful aunt!

That I am. I have wonderful aunts. I'm very lucky to have had them, all of them, in my life.
